A fragment of a pillar, of about 30 cm in diameter, is in the Franciscan Chapel inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. An old tradition maintain that this it is part of a column to which our Lord Jesus Christ may have been tied while beeing scourged by the soldiers upon Pilates' orders. Such a column is often used in religous paintings as a representation of the flogging of Christ before His crucifixion. Mark 14:65 They all condemned him as worthy of death. Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, "Prophesy!" And the guards took him and beat him. |
