Zhao Yun was an attendant in the service of Gongsun Zan, a warlord of the later Han. Under Gongsun Zan, Zhao Yun fought against Yuan Shao and received merit for his victories.
After Gongsun Zan died, Zhao Yun went over to serve Liu Bei. In the twelfth year of Rebuilt Tranquility (AD 207), Zilong protected Liu Bei's son Liu Shan, while riding through thousands of troops at Chang Ban Po. For this act he was appointed Garrison Commander by Liu Bei.
In the nineteenth year of Rebuilt Tranquility (AD 219), when Liu Bei assumed the role of King of Hanzhong, Zhao Yun was honored as a Tiger General.
Under Emperor Liu Shan, Zilong was appointed Central Army Guard, General Who Conquers the South, and General Who Guards the East and titled Lord of Yongchang Precinct.
In AD 227, when Zhuge Liang began his Northern Campaigns, Zilong received orders to hold a position against Wei's army. Because of a lack of troops, Zhao Yun suffered defeat and was demoted to General Who Controls the Army.
Zilong died two years later in AD 229, and was posthumously titled Lord of Shunping . He had two sons, Tong and Guang, who guarded his tomb and later died in service of the Shu Emperor.
